Ariadni Adamopoulou, the Oklahoma State indoor and outdoor women's pole vault record holder, in addition to being a Greek national champion in the Under-18, Under-20 and Under-23 divisions, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her lifetime-best 14-4 (4.37m) clearance Feb. 12 at the Texas Tech Shootout at the Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, which has her ranked as the No. 5 collegiate indoor competitor this year. Adamopoulou, 20, became only the second Greek vaulter age 20 or younger to clear at least that height indoors, joining Olympic gold medalist and World champion Katerina Stefanidi. She speaks about her improvement from her first season in Stillwater until this year, and how proud she is of the consistency in her vaulting, clearing at least 14 feet in every competition this indoor season. Adamopoulou reflects on returning home to Greece during the summer and how significant it was to win the Under-23 national title with an outdoor personal-best 13-11.25 (4.25m). She expresses gratitude for both her coaching in Greece, as well as working with Oklahoma State's Josh Langley, who has continued to create training and competition opportunities for Adamopoulou during the pandemic. Adamopoulou reveals the dynamic of training multiple times during the week in the lobby of Gallagher-Iba Arena, since the Cowboys don't have their own indoor track and field facility. She examines the top vaulters in both the Big 12 Conference and NCAA Division 1, and analyzes her opportunities to win her first career title at the collegiate level. Adamopolou reflects on her experiences of vaulting Feb. 7 against professional athletes at the American Track League event at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., also the site of the March 11-13 NCAA Indoor Championships. She reminisces about meeting World Indoor gold medalist Sandi Morris, who achieved the world lead clearing 16 feet (4.88m). Adamopoulou also talks about pursuing a degree in psychology and the mental challenges that come with competing at an elite level in the pole vault.
